2020 Comprehensive Food Security and Vulnerability Analysis report launched

World Food Programme Representative and Country Director, Barbara Clemence, together with Ghana Statistical Service (GSS), Ministry of Food and Agriculture and other stakeholders have launched the findings of the 2020 Comprehensive Food Security and Vulnerability Analysis (CFSVA) report in Accra.

According to her, the WFP has a dual mandate in the Sustainable Development Goals 2 and 17 (SDGs 2 & 17) to help attain Zero Hunger and building strategic partnerships to achieve those goals.

She said the WFP’s mandate demands a comprehensive demand-driven analysis of the context to operate and inform its work.

Aligned with the Government and people of Ghana’s vision for economic self-reliance, she stressed that, the WFP’s role is evolving from direct assistance to enabling development support which focuses on technical assistance like the CFSVA exercise, flood assessments and quarterly food and nutrition monitoring system led by the Ministry of Food and Agriculture.

In addition to this evolution in our development work, she said, WFP will continue to provide strategic humanitarian support as long as it is needed.

“With government leading, WFP’s Research, Assessment and Monitoring team has supported this nationwide 2020 Comprehensive Food Security and Vulnerability Analysis. Ideally, this exercise is conducted every 3 to 5 years to analyze prevailing food security and nutrition situation trends”, Ms. Clemence noted.

The Country Director was delighted to have learnt the first CFSVA in Ghana where data has been collected and analyzed at the district level in the 260 districts, adding that, this provides a comprehensive comparative analysis at the district and regional levels to inform the needed interventions.

“It is noteworthy that this exercise has a fourfold objective that will assist Ghana to build back better in terms of the impact of COVID-19, targeting of food security, nutrition, social protection

and other programmes, tracking of Zero Hunger (SDG 2) indicators and planning and contributing to policy engagement”, she noted.

She expressed her appreciation to GSS as the lead partner and other partners for their support during the compilation of the report.

“I am grateful to GSS, Ministry of Food and Agriculture, the UN Resident Coordinator’s office, and members of the CFSVA Technical and Steering Committees for contributing their quota to this exercise”, she said.

The CFSVA was co-funded under the strategic partnership of WFP and FAO with financial contribution from the World Bank approved by the Government of Ghana.
