2021 WAPCMLS AGM: Let’s allocate adequate budgets for training lab scientists & setting up standard labs- Prof. Nafiu Amidu
President of West African Postgraduate College of Medical Laboratory Science (WAPCMLS) Prof. Nafiu Amidu has called on governments of Africa to immediately allocate sufficient budgets for training lab scientists and setting up standard laboratories to scale up preparedness for containment, combating and preventing the spread of infectious diseases in the sub region.
The latest call by Prof. Nafiu Amidu comes at the period the West African sub-region has been hard-hit with infectious Covid-19 pandemic with devastating impacts to lives and national economy
Speaking to African Editors after official Opening Ceremony of 2021 Annual General and Scientific Meeting of the West African Postgraduate College of Medical Laboratory Science (WAPCMLS), Ghana Chapter on theme: Postgraduate Medical Laboratory Science Education and Practice in West Africa on Saturday, 17 July, 2021 in Accra, the University of Development Studies’ (UDS) School of Allied Health Sciences Professor Amidu said “We don’t have enough high standard laboratories and adequate highly-trained personnel in the West African sub- region. Africa governments should devote sufficient budgets for producing highly trained lab professionals and set up high standard labs across the sub region”.
Prof. Nafiu Amidu noted that “We need to shift our training from four years BSC to six years to produce professionals for emergency situations. Let’s harmonise training within West Africa so that people don’t have to be transported to different countries for treatment “.
