2024 polls: Court bars Cynthia Morrison from going independent
A District Magistrate Court in Agona Swedru, Central Region, has issued an injunction against Cynthia Morrison, preventing her from running as an independent parliamentary candidate for the Agona West Constituency. This injunction prohibits her from presenting herself as a candidate until an ongoing legal case is resolved.
Morrison, who previously won the Agona West parliamentary seat for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in 2016 and 2020, decided to run independently after claiming unfair treatment during the NPP’s internal primary for the 2024 elections. She announced her independent candidacy three months ago following her defeat in the party’s parliamentary primary, where she received 152 votes compared to Christopher Arthur’s 240.
Despite her loss, Morrison remains committed to the development of Agona West and has expressed her desire to continue serving the constituency. However, with less than two months until the 2024 elections, the court’s injunction raises uncertainty about her candidacy, as the case may not be resolved in time.
The magistrate’s order bars her from campaigning until the issue is fully settled. Morrison, a former Minister for Gender, Children, and Social Protection, has urged her constituents to support her independent bid, emphasizing her focus on Agona West’s development amid the legal and political challenges she faces.
