2024 Polls: Mahama vows no National Cathedral funding

John Dramani Mahama, the Flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and former President, has raised concerns about the decision to prioritize the construction of a national cathedral over crucial educational and infrastructural needs in Ghana.

Mahama expressed doubts about the choice, suggesting that God would not rank a cathedral above investments in education. He emphasized the necessity of addressing urgent educational and infrastructural issues before embarking on projects like the national cathedral.

Speaking at a public lecture at Wisconsin International University College, Ghana, Mahama was asked about his position on completing the national cathedral if he were to be elected president. He explained that the commitment to build the cathedral was a personal promise made by President Akufo-Addo to God, rather than a divine command.

According to Mahama, if he had the opportunity to allocate $400 million, he would prioritize investing in textbooks for students and upgrading critical infrastructure such as turning the single road from Accra to Cape Coast into a dual carriageway. He argued that these investments would have greater benefits for the nation compared to the construction of the national cathedral.

Akufo-Addo's luxurious travels must stop, it's insensitive and disrespectful- Mahama
