2024 polls: Uphold truth, integrity –Akufo-Addo to journalists
President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo urged Ghanaian journalists to uphold integrity and professionalism in their reporting as the country approaches the 2024 general elections. Speaking at the 28th Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) Media Awards and the association’s 75th anniversary celebration in Accra on Saturday, 28 September 2024, the President emphasized the dangers of misinformation and sensationalism in today’s digital age, urging the media to ensure accuracy and balance in their reporting.
Recognizing the crucial role of the media in shaping public opinion, especially during elections, President Akufo-Addo stressed the importance of journalists providing truthful and unbiased information to the public. As Ghana gears up for the 2024 elections, the President called on journalists to be vigilant in preventing the spread of false information that could undermine the democratic process.
In light of the fast-paced nature of social media, where information spreads rapidly, Akufo-Addo called on journalists to act as guardians of truth, prioritizing facts over falsehoods. He acknowledged the media’s historical role in promoting peaceful elections and democratic transitions in Ghana and highlighted the heightened importance of fair and accurate reporting in the upcoming elections.
Reaffirming his government’s commitment to media freedom, President Akufo-Addo emphasized the vital role of a free and independent press in strengthening Ghana’s democracy. He urged the media to continue their essential work of reporting with integrity, fairness, and providing voters with the information they need to make informed decisions. Akufo-Addo concluded by expressing his dedication to ensuring that the media in Ghana remains free, vibrant, and independent for the progress and integrity of the nation.
Meanwhile, the Ghaianan Leader Akufo-Addo stressed the importance of accuracy in reporting during the December 7 polls, cautioning journalists to prioritize truth over fake news. He emphasized that journalists play a crucial role in ensuring a fair and transparent election in 2024, urging them to be vigilant against misinformation and sensationalism. Despite acknowledging the valuable contributions of the media in past elections, he warned about the dangers posed by fake news in today’s digital age and called on journalists to stand firm as defenders of the truth. Akufo-Addo reiterated his commitment to a free and vibrant press, highlighting its essential role in Ghana’s democracy as the nation gears up for the 2024 elections.
