2025 NPG Media Meet-Up: A glimpse into Ghana’s nuclear future
The 2025 Nuclear Power Ghana (NPG) media meet-up provided journalists and stakeholders with valuable insights into the progress of Ghana’s nuclear energy initiatives. The event, which featured updates from key players in the nuclear energy sector, explored the status of the country’s nuclear power projects, future plans, and the collaboration between media and industry professionals. Here are the highlights of the event:
Updates and wayforward on Ghana’s Nuclear Power Project by Dr. Stephen Yamoah
Dr. Stephen Yamoah, Executive Director of Nuclear Power Ghana, provided a comprehensive update on the country’s nuclear power programme. He emphasized the significant strides made towards the development of nuclear energy as part of Ghana’s broader energy mix. Dr. Yamoah outlined the project’s timeline, challenges, technical and regulatory frameworks in place to ensure the safe and sustainable development of nuclear power in the country. He also spoke about the ongoing collaborations with international partners -US, China and Ghana’s commitment to meeting energy needs while promoting environmental sustainability.
“We are on track to meet our target of introducing nuclear power into Ghana’s energy grid,” Dr. Yamoah said. “The nuclear power project is an integral part of our long-term strategy to diversify our energy sources and ensure energy security for the future”.
Status of nuclear power programme by Dr. Archibold Buah-Kwofie
Dr. Archibold Buah-Kwofie, Acting Director of the Nuclear Power Institute (NPI), at Ghana Atomic Energy Commission, provided an in-depth overview of the current status of the nuclear power programme in Ghana. He outlined the progress made in the research and development phases, highlighting the crucial role of the Nuclear Power Institute in providing technical expertise, training, and capacity building for the workforce involved in the nuclear sector.
Dr. Buah-Kwofie noted that the programme was on schedule, with key milestones already achieved, such as the completion of feasibility studies and the establishment of regulatory frameworks. He also discussed the importance of safety and public education in ensuring the successful integration of nuclear energy into the country’s energy grid.
Viewing of nuclear power plant model by Mr. Daniel Wordson
The journalists were given a rare opportunity to view a detailed model of the nuclear power plant that is set to be developed as part of Ghana’s nuclear energy project. Mr. Daniel Wordson, Manager at the Office of the Executive Director of Nuclear Power Ghana, led the tour, explaining the intricacies of the design and the technological advancements incorporated into the plant’s layout.
The model showcased the various components of the nuclear plant, including the reactor and safety systems. Wordson emphasized the state-of-the-art features that would ensure both the efficiency and safety of the plant, further reassuring the public about the safety of nuclear power generation.
Tour of nuclear reactor model at Bui Power Authority
Journalists were also led on a tour to catch a glimpse of a nuclear reactor model at the Bui Power Authority (BPA) office. The tour was part of the ongoing efforts to familiarize the media and the public with the workings of nuclear reactors and their role in the country’s energy strategy. Officials from Nuclear Regulatory Authority, Nuclear Power Ghana led by Daniel Wordson, provided explanations on the reactor’s design and how it integrates into Ghana’s broader energy plans.
The collaboration between NPG, NRA and BPA signifies the importance of public-private partnerships in achieving the country’s energy goals. The model provided a tangible representation of what the full-scale reactor will look like once operational.
AGI-Media project status
The AGI Media Project status update was presented by an Executive from the Central Media Committee on Ghana’s Nuclear Power Project, Vice Chairman Jerry John Akornor. The presentation highlighted the role of the Association in fostering public understanding of nuclear power and in facilitating dialogue between industry stakeholders, the government, and the media.
The AGI’s media project has played a crucial role in promoting awareness and addressing concerns related to nuclear energy. The Executive emphasized the importance of accurate reporting and public education to dispel myths and build confidence in the country’s nuclear ambitions.
Review of stories for NPG Board Chairman’s Awards
Senior Lecturer at the University of Media Arts and Communication Institute of Journalism (UniMAC-IJ), Mr. David Apawu-Dankwa, shared his remarks on the review of the stories submitted for the NPG Board Chairman’s Awards. Mr. Apawu-Dankwa praised the improvements in the quality of the stories submitted, noting that journalists had demonstrated a deeper understanding of nuclear power issues.
“We saw a significant improvement in the submissions this year,” Apawu-Dankwa stated. “The best five stories selected reflect the growing expertise of journalists in covering nuclear energy topics, and we look forward to further developing this capacity.”
Remarks on Bui Power Authority’s involvement
The Acting CEO of Bui Power Authority Ing. Kow Eduakaw Sam provided brief remarks on the authority’s involvement in Ghana’s nuclear power project. The CEO highlighted BPA’s role in supporting the country’s energy diversification efforts, particularly through its collaboration with Nuclear Power Ghana. BPA’s expertise in power generation and infrastructure will play a key role in the successful implementation of nuclear power in Ghana.
Q&A session
The event concluded with a lively Q&A session, where journalists engaged with the panelists on a range of topics concerning nuclear power. Questions focused on the safety measures, timelines, vender, sites selection, E2 NuScale SMR simulation center at Ghana Atomic Energy Commission (GAEC), community engagement strategies surrounding the nuclear power programme. The panelists provided detailed answers, reinforcing the transparency and commitment of NPG and its partners to ensure the safe and effective deployment of nuclear power.
Recommendations and plan for 2025
Looking ahead, the key takeaway from the event was the clear commitment to moving forward with the nuclear power project in Ghana. Recommendations for 2025 included enhancing public engagement, increasing media coverage of nuclear energy issues, and continuing to build the technical capacity of the local workforce. NPG also plans to step up efforts in promoting nuclear safety and sustainability in the public discourse. Some journalists suggested that regular touring of nuclear related facilities to catch the glimpse of models, layouts and designs should be prioritised.
