9 aspirants vying for Ejisu parliamentary seat

Nine individuals, including three female members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Ashanti Region, are vying for the vacant Ejisu Constituency seat in the upcoming parliamentary primary election on April 13, 2024.

The seat became available following the passing of the incumbent, Dr John Ampontuah Kumah, at the age of 45 after a brief illness.

Among the aspirants is former President of the Ghana Football Association, Kwesi Nyantakyi, who publicly declared his intention at the party’s campaign launch in the Ashanti Region. Also in the race is Abena Pokuaa Boaitey, known as ‘Ejisu Bronii,’ making her fifth attempt.

Portia Acheampong Abronye, wife of the NPP’s Bono Region Chairman, as well as Helena Mensah, the current Presiding Member of the Ejisu Municipal Assembly, have also thrown their hats into the ring.

Other contenders include former Presiding Member of the Ejisu Municipal Assembly, Michael Owusu, and executive members Kofi Agyapong and Kwabena Boateng. Dr Evans Duah, a lecturer at AAMUSTED, is also seeking the NPP ticket.

The eventual NPP candidate is expected to face competition from three-time MP, Kwabena Owusu Aduomi, who may run as an independent candidate following speculation regarding his ties with the ruling party.

As for the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), Jerryne Asante has been named as a potential candidate, but there is uncertainty surrounding the party’s participation in the by-election.

The NPP has maintained control of the Ejisu seat since 1996.
