9th Parliament records 115 first-term MPs

On January 7, 2025, Ghana officially inaugurated the 9th Parliament of the Fourth Republic, marking the beginning of a new legislative era with a blend of fresh faces and experienced lawmakers.

This significant event followed the December 2024 Presidential and Parliamentary Elections, adding another milestone to Ghana’s democratic development.

The new Parliament features 115 first-term Members of Parliament (MPs), bringing in fresh perspectives, energy, and ideas to the legislative process. These new legislators join 156 returning MPs and 4 others, forming a dynamic body tasked with addressing the country’s pressing issues.

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) emerged as the majority party in the 9th Parliament, securing 183 seats. The New Patriotic Party (NPP) holds 88 seats, while four independent MPs complete the representation.

Regarding gender representation, 40 women have been elected to Parliament, making up 14.5% of the 276 MPs. The NDC has 30 female MPs, and the NPP has 10. While this is a step forward, there remains a need for continued efforts toward achieving gender parity in Ghana’s political arena.

In terms of regional representation, the Ashanti Region leads with 22 new MPs, followed by the Greater Accra and Eastern Regions, each with 15. Other regions, including Bono (7), Western (9), and Northern (8), also contribute significantly to the new parliamentary composition.
