South Dayi MP fights salary for Akufo-Addo & Bawumia’s wives at SC today Thursday
Intense pressure is being mounted on President Akufo-Addo, and his vice Dr. M. Bawumia to immediately place embargo on approval to pay salaries, allowances and emoluments of presidential spouses (their wives).
This follows approval of emolument s of First Lady Rebecca Akufo-Addo and Second Lady Samira Bawumia to be paid salaries and allowances equal to those of cabinet ministers at the time Ghana is hard-hit with covid-19 with devastating impacts to lives and national economy.
Many are of the view that the decision will cripple the public purse and put pressure on the national kitty threatening to challenge approval of presidential spouses’ emoluments in the apex court.
MP for South Dayi Lawyer Nelson Rockson Dafiamakpor says the approval is unconstitutional but the NPP majority caucus in parliament used their numbers to approve the report last year.
In a sharp reaction, the vocal South Dayi Lawmaker said he will file a writ at the Supreme Court Thursday to challenge the legality of the emoluments for Rebecca Akufo-Addo and Samira Bawumia. He noted that “the writ is almost read and by thurday I will file it”
Meanwhile, Vice Chairman of Finance Committee of Parliament and NPP MP Patrick Boamah says spouses of president and vice president deserve salaries because they undertake major projects in the interest of the country.
