Following media conversations about the upcoming New Patriotic Party, NPP presidential primaries since yesterday, it is obvious Hon Alan Kwadwo Kyeremanten’s presidential campaign team is not the least perturbed about the Steering Committee’s decision to strictly adhere to the party’s constitutional provision to decentralise their super delegates elections.

“The super delegates elections, however, is meant to cut down the number of aspirants to five ahead of the November presidential primaries, hence, the ballot must be done in such a way that the delegates would select five out of the ten aspirants to avoid a crisis situation where they may vote for only one or two contestants instead of five,” this is what they seem to be concerned about.

They are also not against the petitioners, but, according to one of their members, they knew that the Steering Committee would stick to its original decision to decentralise the election so they did not stop their campaign tour to return to Accra to observe the meeting yesterday.

He said that those who petitioned the Committee to hold centralised Super Delegates election instead of a decentralised one did that with a good reason to avoid abuse at the regional levels where individual super delegates could be easily identified and intimidated to vote for the incumbent. “If that happens the purpose of the primaries has been defeated and that may create deep cracks that may be very difficult to seal,” he said.

On Thursday, New Patriotic Party, NPP presidential primaries Steering Committee held an emergency meeting in Accra over a petition some presidential aspirants and contestants of the upcoming August Super Delegates election sent them to reconsider their decision to organise a decentralised election. Petitioners are suggesting the party centralised the process.

But, after the meeting, General Secretary, Mr Justin Kodua announced that the party shall adhere to the constitutional provision strictly which, means the election shall be decentralised.

The General Secretary also announced that they are updating the super delegate voters album since some members have passed on and new members have joined who need to be captured in it. “The new album shall be ready early enough for the Super Delegates election in August.”
