Speaking at 50th Anniversary Durba and Annual Congress in Accra on Friday October 13, 2023, Minister of Health Kwaku Agyeman-Manu commended GAMLS for contributing to quality health care in Ghana.
Health laboratories in Ghana play a crucial role in the healthcare system, providing medical investigations and diagnostic services that aid in the proper diagnosis, treatment, and monitoring of patients.
Medical laboratory services are an essential component in the diagnosis and treatment of patients infected with COVID-19, human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), mycobacterium tuberculosis (TB), sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), malaria and other infectious diseases. The laboratory, therefore, plays a pivotal role in medical practice as test results have a major influence on clinical diagnosis and patient management.
The role of Ghana Association of Medical Laboratory Scientists (MLS) in the fight against COVID-19 is in the area of testing in laboratory processes such as preanalytical (contact tracing, samples collection, packaging, and transportation); analytical (samples reception, processing, and testing); and post-analytical (interpretation of results and delivery, disposal and/or archiving of the specimen).
Health Minister Kwaku Agyeman-Manu noted that the ministry is considering the proposal on the table to establish Scientists Directorate at Ministry of Health.
Meanwhile, GAMLS has openly recognized the Health Minister’s contribution to national development and the fight against infections COVID-19 pandemic.
