NPP-Alhaji Zaruk’s removal sparks chaos in Bimbilla

Supporters of Alhaji Nuhu Zaruk, a candidate in the parliamentary primaries for the Bimbilla constituency under the New Patriotic Party (NPP), have engaged in acts of vandalism against party property.

On the evening of January 2, disgruntled supporters gathered at the constituency office demanding an explanation as to why Alhaji Zaruk’s name was removed from the list of candidates to be vetted. Frustrated by this decision, the youth threatened to set the party office on fire unless his name was reinstated. They resorted to burning tires and throwing stones at the office, prompting the military to intervene and disperse the furious supporters.

Some members of the community expressed their desire to see both candidates compete, questioning why the incumbent Member of Parliament (MP) would shy away from the contest if he truly works for the constituency. Emphasizing the importance of democracy, they stated their willingness to accept and support whoever emerges as the winner, but demanded an explanation for the removal of Alhaji Zaruk’s name before the vetting process even began. The regional vetting of parliamentary hopefuls is set to commence from January 3 to 5, 2024.
