EC to hold run-off District level elections Jan 9
The Electoral Commission (EC) has announced that elections will be held on Tuesday, January 9, in order to resolve the ties in the election results from the district-level elections that recently took place. The run-off will take place in 20 Electoral Areas for Assembly Members and 41 Electoral Areas for Unit Committee Members all across the country. The Director of Electoral Services at the EC, Dr. Serebour Quaicoe, explained that the reason for the re-run was due to several electoral areas producing the same results for both Assembly and Unit Committee Members.
In some cases, a winner could not be declared because there was a tie at the first position. This led to the decision to re-run the election. Dr. Serebour Quaicoe highlighted that there were a total of 12 electoral areas where no winner was determined due to an equal number of votes. At the unit committee level, ties were encountered for the fifth position, necessitating the need for re-elections. In these cases, four candidates were elected, but a clear winner for the fifth position could not be determined.
The re-run elections will adhere to the regulations outlined in the District Level Elections Regulations, 2015 (C.I. 8.1).
