AFCON 2024: Black Stars arrive at Abidjan clad in Kente

With great pomp and cultural flare, the Black Stars of Ghana have made their grand entrance in Abidjan on Wednesday, January 10th, 2024 for the 34th edition of the African Cup of Nations (AFCON). Dressed in vibrant Kente Clothes, the Stars, who had previously camped in Kumasi to prepare for the tournament, embarked on their journey via Air Cote D’Ivoire.

As they touched down in Cote D’Ivoire, the Ghanaian players were met with lively cultural dances and rhythmic drumming, truly embracing their Ghanaian heritage. Each player was adorned in a unique variety of traditional Ghanaian Kente clothes, a handwoven textile made from strips of silk and cotton. Originally a garment reserved for royalty among the Ewe and Akan, Kente has now become a symbol of celebration for special occasions in modern-day Ghana.

Settling in at the Pullman hotel in Abidjan, the Stars will prepare for their group matches. Their first encounter will be against Cape Verde on Sunday, January 14th, 2024. The second match poses a formidable challenge as they face off against the seven-time champions, Egypt, on Thursday, January 18th, 2024. The last fixture in the group stage will be against Mozambique on Monday, January 22nd, 2024.

With a remarkable 42 years since their last AFCON title, the Ghana Black Stars hold high hopes of clinching the trophy this time around.
