Ghanaian supporter arrested in Abidjan for attacking Black Stars Coach

In Abidjan, a Ghanaian supporter has been apprehended for attacking the Head Coach of the Black Stars, Chris Hughton, at the team’s hotel. Thankfully, the intervention of Ghanaian diplomats present at the scene saved the coach from harm.

The shocking incident unfolded after Ghana’s defeat to Cape Verde on Sunday, 14 January 2024, at the Africa Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast as a disappointed fan assaulted Head Coach Chris Hughton. The suspect has been handed over to the Ivorian police in Abidjan.

Moving on to the AFCON 2023, Cape Verde has caused quite a stir by defeating Ghana and taking the lead in Group B. Gary Rodrigues proved to be the hero, scoring in added time to secure all three points for Cape Verde. The game seemed destined for a draw until Rodrigues came off the bench and made it 2-1. Initially, Cape Verde stunned Ghana by capitalizing on a rebound, with Jameiro Monteiro finding the back of the net after 17 minutes.

Despite the early setback, the Black Stars exhibited determination in the final third, while Cape Verde continued to apply pressure. Majeed Ashimeru was unlucky to have his excellent strike disallowed for offside, as Ransford-Yeboah was deemed to have obstructed the goalkeeper’s view. At halftime, Ghana found themselves on the losing side, much to the delight of the Islanders.

However, Chris Hughton’s team emerged from the break stronger and quickly found the equalizing goal through Djiku, who connected with a Jordan Ayew corner. Djiku then made two crucial goal-saving clearances to keep Ghana in the game. Richard Ofori was called into action in the final 10 minutes and delivered with two impressive saves against Cape Verde.

Unfortunately, a lapse in defense led to Cape Verde regaining the lead, dealing Ghana a frustrating defeat. Looking ahead, Ghana will face Egypt in their next match on January 18, aiming to bounce back from this loss.
