Corruption Perceptions Index: Ghana stagnant in 4yrs

According to Transparency International (TI), Ghana has scored zero in the fight against corruption for the fourth consecutive year, as stated in the Corruption Perceptions Index (CPI) 2023 released on January 30, 2024.The Ghana Integrity Initiative (GII), the local chapter of TI, reported that Ghana received a score of 43 out of 100 and ranked 70th out of 180 countries included in the CPI. This marks the fourth year in a row that Ghana’s efforts to combat corruption have shown no progress. Transparency International attributes this stagnation to the deteriorating justice system, which is reducing the accountability of public officials and allowing corruption to flourish.

The GII recommends that the Parliament pass the Conduct of Public Officers’ Bill, which would require verification of asset declarations and impose severe sanctions for non-compliance. It also calls on the Executive and Legislature to bridge the legal gaps necessary for prosecuting certain corruption cases that are currently outside the existing legal framework.
