Withdraw 15% VAT on electricity or we demo Feb 13 -TUC
There is a growing agitation on the labour front in Ghana as Trade Union Congress (TUC) and 35 other labour unions have announced plans for a demonstration on February 13. This decision was made after the government refused to remove the 15% VAT on electricity, which the TUC and other unions believe will only add to their burdens.
During a meeting on February 2, Dr. Anthony Yaw Baah, the General Secretary of TUC, stated that they had expected to pay the VAT but had agreed not to, giving the government until January 31 to make changes. Since no action was taken, the decision to demonstrate was made, with demonstrations planned in all regional capitals from Accra to Bolgatanga.
Dr. Baah also mentioned that if the government does not withdraw the 15% VAT or invite them to negotiate by Tuesday, they will proceed with the demonstration. Additionally, starting from February 5, all union members will wear red as a sign of protest.
