AFCON 2023: Ivory Coast, Nigeria clash in final
Sebastien Haller scored the decisive goal as Ivory Coast, the hosts of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, defeated DR Congo in a tight contest. This victory sets up a final showdown against Nigeria.
The only goal of the game occurred in the 65th minute when Haller’s volley bounced off the ground and over the opposing goalkeeper. Despite this goal, Haller missed an earlier chance with a header and also narrowly missed converting a lob to extend the lead.
DR Congo made little progress towards equalizing, although Meschack Elia and Simon Banza had chances that were off target.
Ivory Coast had fired their previous coach, Jean-Louis Gasset, and narrowly advanced from the group stage with late goals against Senegal and Mali. Under interim boss Emerse Fae, they have an opportunity to secure their third continental title, following their victories in 1992 and 2015. They will face three-time champions Nigeria in Abidjan on Sunday at 20:00 GMT.
Nigeria secured their place in the final by defeating South Africa 4-2 on penalties after a thrilling 1-1 draw in Bouake.
