Parliament approves 3 to 5yr jail term for LGBTQI+ promoters

Parliament of Ghana has approved the implementation of prison sentences ranging from three to five years for those convicted of advocating, funding, or endorsing LGBTQ+ activities. Individuals involved in these activities could also be imprisoned for a minimum of six months to a maximum of three years.

The bill, which aims to uphold traditional Ghanaian family values, was discussed during parliamentary proceedings. MP Sam Nartey George stated that Ghanaians do not support the promotion of such activities but do respect individuals’ privacy.

“What caused confusion was the advocacy for the promotion of these activities. That is what Ghanaians are against. Nobody is interested in what you do in your bedroom,” clarified the Ningo-Prampram MP.

He went on to say, “So, the punishment for someone caught in the act yesterday, February 7, would be a minimum of 6 months and a maximum of 3 years. However, for anyone willfully promoting, funding, or endorsing the agenda, the penalty is a minimum of 3 years and a maximum of 5 years”.
