Anti-gay bill: ‘What more clarity does Akufo-Addo need?’ -Catholic Bishop

Most Reverend Alfred Agyenta, the Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Navrongo-Bolgatanga, has called on President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo promptly assent to the anti-gay bill because it has received the support from the majority of Ghanaians and should not face any further delays.

“The entire Ghanaian Parliament has unanimously passed this Bill indicating that over 95 percent of Ghanaians are in agreement that do not wish to endorse this lifestyle (LGBTQ+). What do we require?” he questioned.

During his Easter message the Heart Parish in Bolgatanga, Most Rev. Agyenta drew parallels between the actions of Pontius Pilate, who handed Jesus Christ over for cruc knowing innocence, and the current situation.

He cautioned against succumbing to fear, urging the President not to yield to those advising against assenting to the Bill, likening the President’s position to that of Pilate.

“I have pondered whether our President is not in a similar position to Pilate, as he is aware that Parliament’s decision reflects the will of the Ghanaian people, yet some are urging him not to sign the bill due to potential repercussions.”

He urged the President to sign the Bill, emphasizing that the entire nation stands behind him.

Regarding spirituality, the bishop stressed the importance of balancing material pursuits with spiritual growth. He cautioned against placing monetary value on sacred items like holy water and anointing oil, reminding Christians, especially Catholics, that the salvation of all should take precedence over material wealth.

While acknowledging the significance of, he emphasized sacred items should not be commodified, as the church’s primary focus should be on the spiritual well-being of its followers.

Reflecting on the passion, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ, he encouraged Christians to their sins and seek strength to resist temptation, using this period of reflection to reaffirm their commitment to living a righteous life.
