Mahama vows to empower chiefs to participate in governance

Former President John Dramani Mahama, flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has promised to work with traditional chiefs to involve them in the governance of the country. He emphasized that the government alone cannot address all challenges and will need the active participation of chiefs to ensure development.

During a campaign tour in the Ahafo region, Mahama spoke to the Regional House of Chiefs in Goaso and pledged to consult with chiefs on issues such as illegal mining, illegal logging, and littering. He acknowledged that the powers of chiefs have dwindled due to legal restrictions, but highlighted the importance of their involvement in governance.

Mahama initially made this commitment during a visit to the Chief of Sefwi Wiawso in the Western North Region, who raised concerns about the Forestry Commission being given sole authority over forest management. Mahama assured the chief that his administration would empower traditional leaders to protect forests and address environmental challenges.

He stressed the need for collaboration between chiefs and the Forestry Commission to safeguard the environment, noting that government alone cannot effectively protect forests from illegal activities like galamsey. Mahama reiterated his commitment to empowering chiefs and working together to ensure sustainable forest management.
