Be careful with remarks on galamsey –Rev. Opuni-Frimpong to politicians
Rev. Dr. Kwabena Opuni-Frimpong, a former General Secretary of the Christian Council, has advised politicians to be cautious in their public comments regarding illegal mining, or galamsey. He expressed concern that some statements made by government officials appear to support and justify this harmful practice.
He criticized the contradictory remarks made by some officials, warning that such statements could be seen as dismissing the concerns of the public. He specifically noted comments suggesting that mining is necessary for stabilizing the local currency, including remarks from the CEO of the Ghana Chamber of Mines and an NPP MP.
In response, Rev. Opuni-Frimpong called on the public to continue pressuring the government on this issue. He emphasized the need for ongoing advocacy efforts, including from groups like the University Teachers Association of Ghana.
He urged collective action to ensure that the government takes the concerns about galamsey seriously and addresses the environmental impact of this activity. Rev. Opuni-Frimpong emphasized the importance of maintaining pressure on the government and not relenting in the push for change.
