EU Parliament debates Sudan conflict

Sudan is facing the largest displacement crisis globally, with 10.9 million internally displaced and 2.2 million fleeing to neighboring countries, according to Věra Jourová, Vice President of the European Commission, during a European Parliament debate.

Barry Andrews, MEP, criticized European development policy, stating that the situation exemplifies its failures. Maria Walsh, another MEP, highlighted that Sudan is experiencing a full-scale famine, with estimates suggesting that 2.5 million could die by year’s end.

The conflict, which erupted in April 2023 between military and paramilitary forces, has led to a severe humanitarian crisis, with tens of thousands dead and 25 million at risk of famine, according to the U.N. Health officials report a nearly 40% rise in cholera cases, raising alarms about the inadequate response to the ongoing outbreak.
