Dec. 7 elections: Preach peace -Berekuso Assemblyman to Ghanaians
As the countdown to Ghana’s 2024 general elections begins, the Assembly Member for Berekuso Electoral Area in Akuapem South Constituency, Hon. Samuel Appiah, has issued a compelling call to Ghanaians to prioritize peace and unity in the run-up to the December polls. In an exclusive interview with investigative journalist, Omanhene Nana Kofi Amankwa, Hon. Appiah urged all stakeholders in the political process to resist actions that could undermine the nation’s hard-earned reputation as a beacon of peace in West Africa.
“Now, more than ever, we need to reflect on what Ghana represents to the rest of the world. Our peaceful transition of power since 1992 has made us an example for democracy in the region, and we cannot allow this to be jeopardized,” Hon. Appiah stressed.
He underscored the role of every Ghanaian citizen in upholding the country’s democratic ideals. “This election is not just about choosing a leader; it’s about safeguarding our collective future. Every vote matters, and every action in the lead-up to the polls can either make or break our democracy.”
Hon. Appiah urged political parties and their supporters to set aside partisan differences and focus on what unites Ghanaians—peace. “In the heat of political campaigns, it’s easy to lose sight of the bigger picture. The stakes are high, but we must not let the intensity of political discourse erode the peace we hold dear.”
He also called for a concerted effort from all political actors, including the media, civil society, and security agencies, to maintain a peaceful atmosphere throughout the election period. “We must ensure that no individual or group seeks to sow division or create violence in the name of politics. Our democracy is a shared responsibility,” he added.
Ghana’s political stability has been a model for neighboring countries facing similar challenges, and Hon. Appiah believes the upcoming elections offer an opportunity to set an even higher standard for the region. “If Ghana gets it right, it will serve as an example for other nations facing political instability and challenges in democratic governance.”
In his message, Hon. Appiah reminded Ghanaians that the real winner of any election is not just the candidate who secures the highest vote but the country itself. “Our national interest must always supersede our political differences. This election is a test of our commitment to democracy, peace, and unity.”
As the nation prepares for one of the most crucial elections in its history, Hon. Appiah’s call serves as a timely reminder that peace is the foundation upon which Ghana’s future must be built.
