President Tinubu congratulates Ghana’s Pres-elect John Mahama
In a heartfelt telephone conversation on December 8, 2024, President Bola Tinubu of Nigeria extended warm congratulations to President-elect John Dramani Mahama of Ghana, following his victory in the December 7 general elections. Mahama’s triumph, confirmed after the concession of his rival, marks a significant milestone for Ghana’s democracy and the broader West African region.
As the Chairman of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), President Tinubu expressed confidence that Mahama’s return to power for a second term would help enhance regional stability. “Your ascension to the presidency for a second time is a victory not just for Ghana, but for West Africa and ECOWAS,” President Tinubu remarked during the call, highlighting the importance of a stable and prosperous region.
The Nigerian leader commended the people of Ghana for their unwavering commitment to democratic principles, evident in the peaceful and orderly conduct of both the presidential and parliamentary elections. He lauded Ghanaians for once again demonstrating that democracy is the pathway to long-lasting political stability, economic growth, and transparent governance in Africa.
“Proud of Ghana’s democratic ethos, you have shown to the world that peaceful elections are not just possible in Africa, but can lead to remarkable outcomes,” President Tinubu said, emphasizing that the people’s right to freely choose their leaders remains a cornerstone of Nigeria’s and the region’s values. This, he added, is a source of pride for all of Africa.
In addition to congratulating President-elect Mahama, President Tinubu praised Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the Vice President of Ghana and candidate for the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), for his gracious concession before the official results were announced by Ghana’s Electoral Commission. “Vice President Bawumia’s swift and dignified acceptance of the election results reinforces the democratic spirit of Ghana,” Tinubu remarked.
The telephone conversation also highlighted Mahama’s distinguished political career. Having served as Ghana’s President from 2012 to 2017, Mahama’s return to power reflects the trust the people of Ghana have in his leadership and vision for the country. Before his presidency, Mahama held various key roles, including Vice President from 2009 to 2012, Member of Parliament from 1997 to 2009, and Ministerial positions from 1998 to 2001.
Looking ahead, President Tinubu reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to strengthening the long-standing bonds between the two nations. “We share a rich history, strong cultural ties, and a deep sense of Pan-Africanism. Nigeria remains steadfast in its support for Ghana as we work together to achieve common goals of economic integration, democracy, and the rule of law,” he noted.
The Nigerian leader also took a moment to acknowledge the outgoing President of Ghana, Nana Akufo-Addo, for his exemplary leadership and contributions to both Ghana’s development and regional peace. “President Akufo-Addo has left an indelible mark on Ghana’s progress, and we are grateful for his role in promoting regional stability,” said President Tinubu.
As both leaders turn their attention to the future, President Tinubu expressed a keen interest in collaborating with Mahama’s incoming administration to deepen Nigeria-Ghana relations across various sectors. “I look forward to working with you, President-elect Mahama, to build a brighter future for our nations and for the entire West African region.”
The message of congratulations underscores the enduring bond between Nigeria and Ghana, nations that have long stood as pillars of democracy, peace, and cooperation in Africa. With Mahama’s leadership set to shape the next chapter of Ghana’s political and economic trajectory, President Tinubu’s support signals a strong partnership in the years ahead.
