GAMLS calls for urgent action against outbreak of Cerebrospinal Meningitis in Northern Ghana

The recent outbreak of cerebrospinal meningitis (CSM) in Northern Ghana has raised serious concerns among health professionals, particularly within the Ghana Association of Medical Laboratory Scientists (GAMLS). As the country grapples with the rising threat of this infectious and life-threatening disease, GAMLS is calling for immediate action to prevent its spread and ensure timely interventions for those affected.

Cerebrospinal meningitis is an infection that causes inflammation of the meninges—the protective membranes surrounding the brain and spinal cord. When left untreated, it can lead to severe health complications, including permanent neurological damage and even death. Given the high risks associated with CSM, swift detection and intervention are critical to saving lives.

The role of Medical Laboratory Scientists in CSM management

Dr. Gloria Amegatcher, the Public Relations Officer of GAMLS, in a statement  emphasized the essential role that medical laboratory professionals play in the timely diagnosis and management of CSM. “Medical laboratory scientists are at the forefront of detecting and diagnosing this deadly disease,” said Dr. Amegatcher. “We are committed to providing reliable and timely laboratory results that are essential in clinical decision-making and ensuring proper treatment for patients”.

As part of its response to the outbreak, GAMLS has outlined key measures to strengthen the country’s efforts in controlling the spread of CSM, focusing on early detection, education, and improved healthcare infrastructure.

1. Enhanced surveillance systems

The association stresses the need for enhanced disease surveillance across the country, particularly in the northern regions where the outbreak is most pronounced. Effective surveillance allows for early detection of new cases, rapid response, and the monitoring of the outbreak’s progress. GAMLS is urging the government and public health authorities to implement stronger surveillance systems to identify and isolate cases quickly, preventing further spread.

2. Scaling up laboratory testing

Accurate and prompt laboratory testing is a cornerstone in diagnosing CSM. GAMLS is calling on healthcare facilities to prioritize diagnostic testing and ensure the availability of the necessary resources for laboratories in affected regions. Laboratory testing is essential not only for confirming CSM but also for determining the appropriate treatment protocol for patients. GAMLS has appealed to relevant authorities to provide the logistical support required to carry out effective testing, especially in the regions most affected by the outbreak.

3. Strict Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) protocols

To curb the transmission of CSM, strict adherence to Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) protocols is vital within healthcare settings. GAMLS is urging healthcare workers and institutions to follow robust IPC measures to prevent the spread of the disease to patients and healthcare providers. Proper sanitization, use of protective gear, and isolation of infected individuals are essential steps in controlling the outbreak.

4. Public education and awareness campaigns

GAMLS recognizes the critical role that public education plays in preventing the further spread of CSM. In its statement, the association is urging the government, public health institutions, and other stakeholders to ramp up public awareness campaigns on the disease. Educating the public about CSM symptoms, preventive measures, and the importance of seeking medical attention promptly can help reduce the number of cases and fatalities.

5. Strengthening laboratory capacities nationwide

GAMLS is also calling for an investment in the nation’s microbiological laboratory infrastructure. Strengthening laboratories will improve Ghana’s ability to respond to not just CSM, but other emerging infectious diseases as well. The association advocates for a nationwide upgrade of laboratory facilities and enhanced training for laboratory scientists to ensure that they are equipped to handle future health crises with greater efficiency.

Commitment to National Health Response

GAMLS reaffirmed its commitment to working alongside the government, public health authorities, and other healthcare professionals to mitigate the impact of the CSM outbreak. “We must act together—strengthening surveillance, improving diagnostics, and educating the public—if we are to overcome this challenge,” Dr. Amegatcher said.

As the outbreak continues to spread in Northern Ghana, the collaboration between healthcare professionals, the government, and local communities is more important than ever. Through strengthened public health measures, improved laboratory capacities, and effective public education, Ghana can prevent further loss of life from cerebrospinal meningitis and ensure that vulnerable populations receive the care they need.

The Ghana Association of Medical Laboratory Scientists remains steadfast in its mission to protect public health and supports all efforts to mitigate the spread of CSM. By working together, the nation can weather this crisis and safeguard the health of its people.
