On Tuesday, July 22, 2025, the Parliament of Ghana approved eight Members of Parliament (MPs) to represent the nation at the ECOWAS Parliament, with Hon. Eric Afful, MP for Amenfi West, named among them. This delegation will serve as Ghana’s voice in the regional body tasked with strengthening integration, democracy, and development across West Africa.
This new cohort reflects Ghana’s continued commitment to regional collaboration, and their role will be critical in shaping decisions that affect over 400 million people in the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) bloc.
Understanding the ECOWAS Parliament
Often referred to as the Community Parliament, the ECOWAS Parliament was established under Articles 6 and 13 of the ECOWAS Revised Treaty of 1993. The Parliament serves as a platform for dialogue, consultation, and consensus-building among the peoples of West Africa. Its initial protocol was signed on August 6, 1994, in Abuja, Nigeria.
The Parliament is made up of 115 seats distributed among member states based on population. Ghana, one of the founding members, continues to play an active role in ensuring that regional policies reflect the needs and aspirations of its people.
The objectives that guide the Parliament
The ECOWAS Parliament is more than just a legislative body — it is a visionary platform with a strong mandate. Its objectives include:
- Strengthening representative democracy within the region.
