NRSA directs 6 MMDAs to stop issuing permits for commercial tricycle operations

National Road Safety Authority (NRSA) has directed six Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) to immediately stop issuance of permits for commercial tricycle operations.

According to Head of Regulation Inspection and Compliance of NRSA Lawyer Kwame Koduah Atuahene, the latest restraining order from the authority, is in agreement with deliberate strategy to reduce alarming cases of accidents on Ghanaian roads.

Speaking in an interview monitored by African Editors in Accra on Friday 10 September 2021, Lawyer Atuahene said “law does not forbid the importation of tricycles. The law forbid the use of tricycles for commercial purposes. They can be used for personal and currier services”.

Lawyer Atuahene noted that “Even in DVLA, these tricycles are registered solely for personal use and currier services. But, if you use tricycles for unlawful purposes, that’s where it’s illegal”.

“MMDAs must stop taking tolls or fees from commercial tricycles riders”, he said.

National Road Safety Authority (NRSA) is in-charge of coordination when it comes road safety in Ghana working with DVLA, police and others to minimize the worrying and rising cases of incidence of road clashes.
