Bill by 2MPs to exclude CJ, SC Justices from GLC in the offing
Two Members of Parliament have served notice of sponsoring a Private Member’s Bill to be introduced into parliament of Ghana to exclude Chief Justice and other Judges of the Supreme Court from serving on the General Legal Council.
The two MPs for South Dayi Lawyer Rockson Nelson Dafeamekpor and Madina Lawyer Francis Xavier Kojo Sosu are seeking to amend the Legal Professions Act, Act 32 to redefine functions of the General Legal Council to pave way for urgent reforms pertaining to legal education in Ghana including accreditation to faculties of law with the necessary facilities to run professional law courses.
In a memo sighted by African Editors, served by the two MPs on the Clerk of Parliament, they are requesting legislative draft office to put together a “bill to be submitted to the speaker for amendment to exclude Chief Justice and other Justices of Supreme Court from serving on the General Legal Council”.

Speaking in an interview monitored by African Editors, Lawyer Dafeamekpor said “the functions of the General Legal Council is to promote legal education and urgent steps must be made to achieve them”.
The latest development follows unsuccessful attempts to by parliament to get 499 law students admitted into the Ghana School of Law including directive to compel the GLC but was shot down by the Attorney General and Minister of Justice in a response to parliament.
