Alan, Accra Mayor, EPA & NADMO tour Makola today after fire outbreak
Trade and Industry Minister Alan Kyeremanten, Accra Mayor Michael Adjei Sowah, officials of Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) are expected to visit the Makola Market in Accra after fire gutted the area.
Inferno yesterday reduced valuable items to ashes at the Makola Market in Accra after the foremost central business district trading hub was gutted by fire spanning over long period of time.
It took intervention of the Ghana National Fire Service to quench the inferno after long period of struggle amid complaints of lack of water in the fire hydrants.
The visit of Makola Market later today by Mr. Alan Kyeremanten, Michael Adjei Sowah, officials of EPA and NADMO is to assess the extent of damage caused by the inferno to inform measures to prevent future fires.
Speaking to African Editors on Tuesday 5 July 2021 in Accra, Mayor Michael Adjei Sowah said “Our visit is to help processes leading to discover the cause of the fire, look at the integrity of the structure, address some of the concerns and the police are currently on a stand-by to prevent access”.
Meanwhile, the Ghana Union of Traders Association (GUTA) is calling for investigation by a bi-partisan committee into recent fire outbreaks in the country.
In his immediate reaction to the latest fire outbreak at Makola President of GUTA Dr. Joseph Obeng wants ” insurance companies to evaluate the state of markets structures before registering marketers as clients”.
