Accountant jailed for blowing ₵40k of Ghana Police Church on betting

Edward Unicorn, age 32, was sentenced to two years in prison by an Adentan Circuit Court for dishonestly taking GH₵40,433.50 from the Ghana Police Church. Unicorn admitted to using the money for online betting and requested bail to work and pay it back, but was denied.

Unicorn pleaded guilty to the charge of stealing and explained that he lost the money while playing the betting game Aviator. He confessed to being addicted to the game and seeking help, although he never followed through with the treatment.

The court, presided over by Mrs. Sedinam Awo Kwadam, convicted Unicorn based on his own admission. He was ordered to pay GHC5,000 and GH₵2,775 from the recovered amount was to be returned to the Ghana Police Church.

According to Chief Inspector Anim Darko, who led the prosecution, the complainant was a police officer and the chaplain of the church, where Unicorn worked as an accountant.
