Ag. EPA Boss Prof. Klutse leads fight against galamsey

In a decisive move to intensify the battle against illegal mining activities, also known as galamsey, Acting Chief Executive Officer of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Professor Ama Browne Klutse, held a high-level meeting with staff at the agency’s Central Regional branch. The meeting was not only a chance for the Acting CEO to engage with frontline officers but also served as the launching pad for a bold new strategy to combat the destructive effects of illegal mining on the environment.

With illegal mining activities continuing to wreak havoc on Ghana’s natural resources, the EPA has recognized the urgent need for a shift in its operational approach. Professor Klutse made it clear that this shift would involve a comprehensive reorganization of the authority, one that will focus on improving the effectiveness of the agency’s fight against galamsey. She outlined plans for a significant shakeup within the EPA, a move she hopes will strengthen the agency’s capacity to enforce environmental regulations and ensure that the agency can take more decisive action in protecting the nation’s environment.

“I am committed to strengthening the EPA’s role in the fight against galamsey,” Professor Klutse declared. “Our environment is under constant threat, and it is essential that we act not only swiftly but also strategically to curb illegal mining activities. The time to act is now.”

The Acting CEO emphasized that collaboration between the central office and regional branches is critical in addressing the galamsey crisis. She acknowledged the tireless efforts of regional officers, who are at the heart of enforcing environmental regulations and tackling illegal mining activities. By bringing the Central Regional staff into the conversation, Professor Klutse sought to leverage their firsthand experience and insights into the ongoing challenges they face in the field.

A key message of the meeting was the importance of teamwork. The Acting CEO underscored that tackling galamsey requires a unified approach, one that goes beyond just enforcement to include proactive measures, such as increased community outreach, intelligence gathering, and more effective collaboration with other agencies. According to Professor Klutse, the success of this strategy hinges on the collective effort of all stakeholders, from local communities to government agencies.

In addition to the emphasis on teamwork, the Acting CEO called for greater investment in the capacity building of EPA staff, particularly in the regions. She outlined a vision for enhanced training, resources, and tools for regional officers, ensuring they are well-equipped to address the evolving challenges posed by illegal mining. By empowering staff and providing them with the necessary resources, Professor Klutse is hopeful that the EPA can increase its effectiveness on the ground.

Professor Klutse’s visit marks a turning point for the EPA in its fight against galamsey. It reflects a renewed determination to tackle the issue head-on, with a clear focus on collaboration, innovation, and sustainability. By aligning the central office with regional branches and strengthening the agency’s operational structure, the EPA is poised to take significant strides in curbing illegal mining and preserving Ghana’s precious natural resources.

The EPA’s revamped strategy, led by Professor Klutse, promises to be a critical step in ensuring that the long-term environmental health of the country is safeguarded against the harmful impacts of illegal mining. With a new sense of urgency and purpose, the EPA is committed to making substantial progress in the fight to eliminate galamsey and restore the country’s ecosystems.
