Adopt ADR for quality justice delivery- Justice Charity Larbi

Justice of Court of Appeal, Justice Irene-Charity Larbi has called for the need urgent to embrace and adopt Alternative Dispute Resolution(ADR) to complement the traditional court system to make justice delivery faster, cheaper, easier, more expeditious, and non-adversarial for citizens.

She has therefore called on parties to embrace ADR since it is a reliable partner.

Speaking at the launch of the 2022 ADR Week Celebration in Ho, Justice Larbi further entreated parties to embrace the ADR in order to deal with decongestion in our courts.

She noted that even though the court system is the right-based process, it has challenges which include factors of cost and delay which impede access to justice.

Additionally, on the need for ADR, Justice Larbi, using the case of a tenant who needs the courts’ intervention to plead extra time to vacate hostile premises, noted that ADR unlike conventional litigation offered greater privacy.

Moreover, she announced that the Alternative Dispute Resolution(ADR) program has been extended to 131 courts across Ghana and five mediators assigned to each.

Also, 635 mediators who have received training, have been assigned to these courts.

Additionally, regional ADR Secretariats consisting of regional coordinators and ADR staff, have been trained and assigned to 10 Regions in the country.

The Chief Justice, His Lordship Kwasi Anin Yeboah has declared March 14-18, 2022 as Alternative Dispute Resolution(ADR) week at the lower courts nationwide.

The Celebration is on the theme: “Making our courts user-friendly through the use of ADR”.

She noted that even though the court system is the right-based process, it has challenges which include factors of cost and delay which impede access to justice.
