Akufo-Addo congratulates new GBA Executives

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo extended his congratulations to the newly elected President of the Ghana Bar Association (GBA), Lawyer Efua Ghartey, and Vice President Victoria Barth, along with the other executives. In a social media post, President Akufo-Addo commended both women for their historic victories, highlighting Mrs. Ghartey’s perseverance and Mrs. Barth’s achievements in the legal field. He emphasized the significance of having women in top leadership positions, especially following the recent passage of the Affirmative Action Act. The President praised the breaking of gender barriers in traditionally male-dominated fields and expressed his confidence in inspiring future generations through their achievements.

In a Facebook post on, President Akufo-Addo hailed Mrs. Ghartey’s achievement as a landmark victory for gender equality, describing it as a “powerful statement” that aligns with Ghana’s ongoing progress towards inclusivity. He linked her historic win to the recent passage of the Affirmative Action Act, reinforcing the broader national efforts toward empowering women.

President Akufo-Addo noted that “A hearty congratulations to Mrs. Efua Ghartey and Mrs. Victoria Osei-Bonsu Barth on their remarkable victories in this year’s Ghana Bar Association elections! Mrs. Ghartey’s determination and perseverance have finally been rewarded as she becomes the first female National President of the Bar Council after three attempts”.

The Ghaianan Leader also expressed confidence in Mrs. Ghartey’s leadership abilities, predicting that she will steer the GBA to greater heights and inspire more women to pursue leadership roles, both within the legal field and beyond.

“As a member of the Bar, I am elated to live to see this day when the Bar is led by a woman. As President of the Republic, this victory is even more significant as it coincides with the recent passage of the Affirmative Action Act, making it an even more powerful statement in the journey towards gender equality,” President Akufo-Addo stated.

The GBA elections saw Efua Ghartey and Victoria Barth elected as President and Vice President, respectively, marking a significant shift towards a more balanced leadership structure within the association. Mrs. Ghartey’s resilience and extensive experience in the legal profession, coupled with Mrs. Barth’s academic excellence and legal prowess, contributed to their successful campaign and election.

The annual general conference, held at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, focused on the theme of peaceful and transparent elections as a key to sustainable democracy, making it a fitting backdrop for the historic election of the GBA’s top officials.
