African Editors is learning that President Nana Akufo-Addo is preparing to announce an upcoming reshuffling of his ministers. A meeting held on February 9 at the Jubilee House has finalized the list of names for the reshuffle. It is expected that the president will make significant changes to his ministerial appointments in response to public demands. This will be the first major government change since former Trade Minister Alan Kyerematen and Agriculture Minister Dr Owusu Afriyie Akoto resigned to focus on their political campaigns a month ago.
African Editors’ sources have confirmed that Majority Leader Osei-Kyei-Mensah Bonsu will be made Minister for Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration whilst the current Information Minister Kojo Oppong Nkrumah will be heading towards the Sports Ministry.
Insiders suggest that the reshuffle will be extensive, but it was strategically postponed to allow for the completion of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential and parliamentary primaries. These primaries were held on January 27 to avoid additional emotional strain for ministers who may have experienced a potential defeat while also transitioning to new responsibilities.
Initially planned for December, the reshuffle was rescheduled for February after the governing party’s internal elections to prevent unsuccessful candidates from attributing their loss to the president.
In addition to the reshuffle announcement, last week saw the removal of 24 Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs), who were replaced by 26 others as part of efforts to revitalize the system.
This decision highlights President Akufo-Addo’s commitment to addressing the needs and aspirations of his ministers, emphasizing his dedication to creating a united and efficient government.
The upcoming changes are expected to bring fresh perspectives, new expertise, and improved efficiency to the ministries involved.
Meanwhile, the NPP flagbearer Dr. M. Bawumia is expected to announce his campaign team members with the current Minister of Regional Reorganization and Development Daniel Kwaku Botwe leading the it.
