Akwatia MP Ernest Kumi is dead

Passing after a Short illness

The Member of Parliament for Akwatia, Ernest Kumi, has passed away after a brief illness. His condition had kept him away from parliamentary duties for several days prior to his death.

Somber mood in Parliament

Kumi’s death has dealt a heavy blow to both Parliament and the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP). Today’s sitting in Parliament was marked by a somber and reflective mood.

A first-time MP amid legal controversy

Mr. Kumi was serving his first term as an MP on the ticket of the NPP. His tenure had been marked by legal controversy surrounding the legitimacy of his election to Parliament.

Recent Supreme Court ruling

Just weeks before his death, the Supreme Court had overturned a contempt conviction against him. The case stemmed from disputes surrounding the 2024 parliamentary election results.

High Court ruling and bench warrant

In February 2025, the Koforidua High Court found Kumi guilty of contempt for defying an interim injunction. The injunction had barred him from presenting himself for swearing-in as an MP. A bench warrant was later issued for his arrest due to his repeated absence from court proceedings and failure to comply with court orders.
