A man identified as Razak Ismail was fatally attacked by a mob in Nima, a predominantly Muslim community in Accra, Ghana, on Wednesday, May 10, 2023.
The brutal assault, reportedly motivated by suspicions of homosexuality, has ignited public outcry and prompted a police investigation.
According to eyewitnesses, a mob ambushed Razak and another man, Abubakar Sedic, following circulating rumours about their alleged relationship and frequent meetings at Frankie’s Hotel in Nima.
The mob allegedly forced its way into the hotel room where the two men had been meeting. In the chaos, Abubakar managed to escape, but Razak was cornered and left alone to face the violent crowd.
Witnesses described a particularly savage attack, with Razak subjected to blows not only from sticks and stones but also from other makeshift weapons wielded by the mob. Some attackers demanded information on Abubakar’s whereabouts during the assault, as others continued to strike Razak. Despite being rushed to the hospital, he succumbed to his injuries shortly after arrival.
The Ghana Police Service has launched an investigation and is currently searching for Abubakar, whom they believe may hold valuable information about the attackers.
Investigators are appealing to the public for any information that could assist in identifying both Abubakar and those responsible for the assault.
Razak’s family, devastated by his tragic death, has expressed both grief and anger, asserting his innocence and blaming Abubakari for allegedly leading Razak into a dangerous situation. The family holds Abubakar partially responsible and has vowed to pursue justice.
The incident has raised significant concerns about rising violence in the community and underscored the dangers faced by individuals perceived as different within the area.
