Alpha Beta Education Centres advocate inclusion of more females in STEM education

Dr. Naomi Adjepong, Director of Alpha Beta Education Centres, is advocating for greater female participation in Ghana’s STEM education initiatives. She emphasizes the importance of quality facilities to enhance learning outcomes.

The school has already integrated Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) courses into its curriculum. Dr. Adjepong made her remarks during the STEM Week 2024 event held in Accra which featured a STEM fair showcasing student projects and modules.

The theme of the event was “Together Let’s Empower Africa’s Future Through STEM Education.” Dr. Adjepong hopes that such initiatives would cultivate critical thinking, problem-solving skills, and creativity among young people.

Alpha Beta has invested in resources to support hands-on learning, applying STEM concepts to real-world scenarios. The school also stresses the importance of embracing failure as part of the STEM learning journey.

To address gender disparity, Alpha Beta launched the “STEM Champions Programme,” which trains girls in various communities. Currently, 25 girls are enrolled, with a goal of reaching 100 by the end of the year.

Dr. Adjepong noted the success of their STEM initiatives, stating, “From last year to this year, we’ve been proactive in ensuring our students have excellent facilities for studying STEM subjects, including upgrading to two ultra-modern science labs.”

Seth Ogoe Ayim, CEO of Bountiful Technologies, highlighted the necessity of involving girls in STEM, noting that only 20% of women currently participate in this field. He stated, “We want to bridge the gender gap to ensure that girls can contribute to a digital economy.”

Participating organizations in the Alpha Beta STEM project include Genesis Oil and Gas Services, Maurya Education Limited, Starlife Insurance, Stanbic Bank, Bountiful Technologies, Digicraft, DEXT, IoT Network Hub, and Stemrobo.

Through its focus on STEM education, Alpha Beta is equipping students for future success and nurturing the next generation of leaders and innovators while promoting diversity and creativity.
