AngloGold-Obuasi clash: Mahama orders probe
President John Mahama has directed an immediate investigation into the violent confrontation between illegal miners and military personnel at the AngloGold Ashanti (AGA) Mine in Obuasi.
The incident, which resulted in the deaths of seven individuals and left one soldier injured, occurred after a group of around 60 illegal miners breached the security perimeter of the mine and attempted to access the Deep Decline area. When soldiers tried to prevent them, the miners opened fire, leading to a shootout that claimed the lives of several miners.
A statement released on Sunday, January 19, by Felix Ofosu Kwakye, the acting spokesperson for the President, expressed condolences over the loss of lives and confirmed that AngloGold Ashanti will be responsible for covering the medical expenses of those injured and facilitating funeral arrangements for the deceased.
“The Government deeply regrets the tragic loss of up to eight lives, believed to be illegal miners, in the violent clash at the Obuasi mining site,” the statement read.
In response, President Mahama has ordered a thorough investigation to determine the causes of the incident and ensure that any wrongdoing is prosecuted. He has also directed security forces to take swift action to restore order and prevent future violence in the region.
AngloGold Ashanti schools close temporarily due to security concerns
In light of escalating security issues in Obuasi, AngloGold Ashanti Schools have announced a temporary closure for the safety of students, staff, and other stakeholders. The closure, effective Monday, January 20, and Tuesday, January 21, 2025, follows reports of vandalism, including the burning of vehicles and property damage. The school plans to reopen on Wednesday, January 23, if the situation improves.
A statement issued by the school on Sunday stated, “In order to protect lives and property, and ensure the safety and well-being of our community, AngloGold Ashanti Schools will remain closed on January 20 and 21. We will reassess the situation and inform you of any further changes.”
