There is a controversy over bill to criminalise LGBTQ+, lesbianism and gayism currently in Parliament.
The bill which prescribed severe punishment for persons who engaged in
LGBTQ+ and every advocacy about homosexuality including those on social media has sparked controversy.
Speaking in an interview monitored by African Editors on 23 July 2021 in Accra, Ningo Prampram MP Samuel Nartey George insists “When you carried out any activity that promote illegal acts, you’ll be punished”.
But, Human Rights lawyer Martin Kpebu has urged parliament to broaden consultations on the bill before passage.
In a sharp reaction, Spokesperson for National Chief Imam Sheikh Dr. Nuhu Sharubutu, Sheikh Areymeyaw said “We in the Muslim community and the National Chief Imam condemn LGBTQ. It will create problems and we are in support of what parliament is doing. LGBTQ+ will kill family values and it’s a matter for national community not only one person”.
Meanwhile, former Executive Director of Amnesty International Ghana Robert Amoafo Akoto is of the view that “the whole LGBTQ+ bill is unnecessary. Let focus on what’s necessary. My input is that the bill should totally be thrown out”.
In a sharp rebuttal, General Secretary of christian Council of Ghana Rev. Cyril Fayose says “the facts that we learn from others doesn’t mean we must copy wrong values. Let the bill go through the process”.
