Appointments C’ttee to be reconstituted

Alban Bagbin, the Speaker of Parliament, has directed the Committee of Selection to reconstitute the Appointments Committee following a disruption during the vetting session on January 30, caused by both minority and majority members.

“This action is aimed at rebuilding trust and ensuring the Committee functions impartially and efficiently,” Bagbin stated.

Additionally, Bagbin has established a seven-member committee, led by Emmanuel Bedzrah, to investigate the incident and submit a report within 10 days. Four MPs involved in the chaos have been suspended, and the Clerk of Parliament has been instructed to assess damage to property in the Appointments Committee room. Those responsible for the damage will be required to cover repair costs.

The following measures have been implemented by the Speaker of Parliament:

1. Suspension of MPs Involved: Four MPs have been suspended for two weeks as a disciplinary action for their role in the altercations. During this period, they are prohibited from participating in parliamentary activities and sessions.

2. Criminal Complaint to the Police: The Clerk of Parliament is to file a formal criminal complaint with the police, initiating a full investigation into the incident to hold those accountable under the law.

3. Reconstitution of the Appointments Committee: The Committee of Selection has been tasked with reconstituting the Appointments Committee to restore confidence and ensure its fair and effective operation.

4. Assessment of Property Damage: The Clerk of Parliament is also responsible for evaluating the extent of the damage to parliamentary property. MPs found responsible will be financially liable for repairs or replacements.

5. Seven-Member Investigative Committee: A seven-member committee, headed by Emmanuel Bedzrah, has been appointed to thoroughly investigate the incident. The committee is required to report back with its findings and recommendations within 10 days.
