Candidates in Chad concluded their final campaign messages on Saturday ahead of the country’s first presidential election since the passing of long-serving ruler Idriss Deby. Success Masra, the current prime minister of the interim government, is one of the leading contenders.
Speaking to his supporters in the capital city of N’Djamena, the former African Development Bank executive pledged a brighter future for young people and the creation of additional job opportunities. His platform includes a comprehensive plan to generate 200,000 jobs over five years, with equal distribution between the public and private sectors to ensure a “minimum package of dignity”.
Masra’s grassroots campaign also focuses on addressing pressing issues such as access to electricity, water, and overall security for all citizens. He emphasized the importance of unity and peace for the entire nation, rather than victory for any specific group.
Meanwhile, in another part of the city, interim president General Mahamat Idriss Deby Itno, known as “MIDI”, also rallied his supporters. He took power following his father’s death in combat against rebel forces, after ruling the country with an authoritarian hand for thirty years.
Deby Jr. assumed office with a promise to hold elections within 18 months, but the poll was delayed, allowing him to run for president. He enjoys strong support from various political parties and civil society organizations, indicating a probable victory in the election.
Polling stations are set to open early on Monday morning, with results expected by May 21st and a potential second round on June 22nd. Chad’s election marks a significant step in the region, where several countries have recently experienced coups and are working towards returning to democratic processes.
