Cholera outbreak in C/R: GAMLS calls for urgent measures to combat the disease

In a recent press release dated February 11, 2025, the Ghana Association of Medical Laboratory Scientists (GAMLS) has issued an urgent public health alert following the confirmation of a cholera outbreak in the Central Region of Ghana. The outbreak, which occurred between February 6-8, has already seen 69 confirmed cases and tragically, 2 fatalities. The Effutu District has been identified as the epicenter, recording 38 cases and both deaths. Other affected districts include Agona West, Gomoa Central, Cape Coast, and Komenda Edina Eguafo Abirem.

As the number of cases continues to rise, GAMLS is calling for immediate collective action from government bodies, healthcare professionals, and the general public to prevent further transmission and save lives. The association emphasizes that cholera, although serious, is both preventable and treatable with the right public health measures and healthcare intervention.

Key preventive measures to combat cholera

GAMLS is urging the public to adhere to critical hygiene practices that can reduce the risk of cholera. These measures include:

1. Safe Drinking Water: Drink only boiled or chlorinated water and avoid untreated sources.

2. Hand Hygiene: Wash hands with soap before eating, after using the toilet, and when handling food.

3. Safe Sanitation: Use latrines and ensure proper disposal of feces to prevent contamination.

4. Food Safety: Eat thoroughly cooked meals and peeled fruits to minimize exposure to the bacteria.

5. Early Detection: Seek medical attention immediately if symptoms such as severe diarrhea, vomiting, or dehydration are observed. Oral rehydration solutions (ORS) can be life-saving when administered early.

The critical role of laboratory testing in outbreak control

Accurate and timely diagnosis is essential in containing the spread of cholera. Medical Laboratory Scientists play a crucial role in detecting the presence of Vibrio cholerae, the bacteria responsible for cholera. Their work involves conducting stool cultures, rapid tests, and determining antibiotic sensitivity to ensure effective treatment. Furthermore, laboratory professionals monitor trends in the outbreak, which is vital for guiding public health interventions.

GAMLS laboratories have been working tirelessly to support testing efforts, but the association emphasizes that increased resources, such as testing kits, reagents, and personal protective equipment (PPE), are urgently needed. Greater collaboration between healthcare providers and the government will also be critical in addressing the outbreak effectively.

Call for immediate collaboration and action

In its press release, GAMLS is urging multiple stakeholders to work together to address the outbreak:

Government & Health Authorities: Strengthen laboratory capacity by providing necessary supplies such as test kits, reagents, and PPE. Expand vaccination campaigns in the Central Region, similar to those planned for Greater Accra, and accelerate public education on cholera prevention.

Healthcare Workers: Promptly report suspected cases for swift testing and isolation to prevent further spread of the disease.

The Public: Engage in hygienic practices and avoid spreading misinformation. Active participation in community sensitization programs is essential.

Early detection saves lives

GAMLS stresses that cholera can be fatal within hours if untreated. Warning signs such as watery diarrhea, rapid dehydration, and muscle cramps should prompt immediate medical attention. It is critical that individuals do not delay seeking treatment.

A long-term solution: Addressing systemic gaps in water and sanitation

While immediate actions are necessary to control the current outbreak, GAMLS is calling for long-term investments in public health infrastructure, particularly in the areas of water and sanitation. Cholera outbreaks are often symptomatic of broader systemic issues in public health infrastructure, and addressing these issues could prevent similar outbreaks in the future.

Closing appeal for immediate action

Dr. Gloria Amegatcher, Public Relations Officer of GAMLS, concluded the press release with a call to action, urging all stakeholders to act swiftly to protect lives and prevent further loss. “GAMLS stands ready to support health authorities and communities in combating this outbreak. Together, we can save lives and ensure that cholera remains under control.”

As the situation unfolds, it remains clear that the collaborative efforts of government bodies, healthcare professionals, and the public will be essential in overcoming this cholera outbreak and preventing future health crises in Ghana.
