Appointment Announcement

President John Dramani Mahama has officially appointed Commissioner of Police (COP) Christian Tetteh Yohunu as the new Inspector-General of Police (IGP), according to an official statement released by the Presidency on Thursday, March 13, 2025.

Constitutional and Legal Framework

The appointment, in line with Articles 91 and 202 of the 1992 Constitution, was made following consultation with the Council of State. COP Yohunu succeeds COP Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, who has been relieved of his duties as IGP.

Experience and Expectations

The statement, signed by Felix Kwakye Ofosu, the Minister for Government Communications and Spokesperson to the President, highlighted COP Yohunu’s extensive 40 years of experience in policing. His appointment comes with the expectation that he will spearhead the modernization and transformation of the Ghana Police Service.

A New Era for Police Leadership

This change in leadership is part of President Mahama’s broader initiative to prioritize reforms and modernization within the country’s security sector, signaling a significant shift in the direction of the Ghana Police Service.
