COP Kofi Boakye joins Mahama’s campaign

Former Commissioner of Police (COP), Kofi Boakye, has surprised many by joining the National Democratic Congress (NDC) campaign in their quest to regain power from the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP).

Boakye was spotted at the NDC’s 24-hour Economy Sensitization Walk in Kumasi, where he joined former President John Mahama and NDC National Chairman Johnson Asiedu Nketiah. This has led to speculation that Boakye may be chosen as Mahama’s running mate in the upcoming December 2024 elections.

Sources within the NDC reveal that discussions and selection processes are ongoing, with growing confidence that Mahama will surprise party members by nominating Boakye. Boakye’s close relationship with Mahama and his connections in the Ashanti Region, particularly with the Manyhia Palace, have fueled this speculation.

However, Boakye faces tough competition from other potential candidates. Former Chief of Staff Julius Debrah and Professor Jane Naana Opoku Agyemang, Mahama’s running mate in the 2020 general election, are also considered frontrunners.

Opinions within the NDC are divided regarding Opoku Agyemang’s potential reappointment, as her selection in 2020 did not contribute significantly to the party’s victory. Supporters argue that choosing her again would have little impact and may not benefit the NDC’s chances in the upcoming elections.

The selection of Mahama’s running mate has also sparked debates about regional representation. Some believe that choosing a candidate from the Eastern Region, where President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo hails from, would be a strategic move. Others argue that selecting a candidate from the Ashanti Region would help the NDC challenge the NPP’s dominance.
