CoSPAL’s 2nd General Assembly begins today

The 2nd General Assembly of the Conference of Speakers and Presidents of African Legislatures (CoSPAL) is set to take place from Friday, October 25, to Sunday, October 27, 2024, at the Kempinski Hotel Gold Coast City in Accra, as announced by Ghana’s Parliament through its Media Relations Department.

This assembly is expected to gather around 120 participants, including 15 Speakers and Presidents of National Legislatures, 30 Deputy Speakers and Presidents, along with Clerks, Secretary Generals, and other parliamentary staff from across Africa.

According to Parliament, the assembly aims to build on the foundation established during the 1st General Assembly, fostering unity and collaborative governance among African legislatures under the leadership of the Rt. Hon Speaker of Parliament, who currently serves as President of CoSPAL.

The statement emphasized that this assembly marks a significant step toward enhancing legislative effectiveness and promoting regional solidarity in tackling shared challenges across the continent. Additionally, the Ghanaian Parliament intends to use this event to highlight Ghana’s democratic values and renowned hospitality to its continental peers.

CoSPAL was founded in 2020 to facilitate increased dialogue, collaboration, and cooperation among Speakers and Presidents of Parliaments and National Assemblies in Africa, addressing common challenges, formulating joint strategies, and mobilizing collective efforts for Africa’s development. The inaugural General Assembly took place in May 2022 in Abuja, led by former Speaker of the House of Representatives of Nigeria, Rt. Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila, setting the stage for discussions on crucial issues related to post-COVID economic recovery and democratic development.
