Dec. 7 elections: I’ll only accept transparent and fair results –Mahama to BBC
John Dramani Mahama, presidential candidate for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has reiterated that he will only accept the results of Ghana’s December 7, 2024 elections if the process is transparent and fair.
In an exclusive interview with Thomas Naadi of BBC Africa, Mahama made it clear that the credibility of the election results depends entirely on the integrity of the electoral process.
When asked if he would accept the outcome regardless of the result, Mahama responded, “If on election day there is widespread ballot snatching, violence, intimidation by the military, shootings, and thugs rampaging, how can I accept that result? It will depend on the transparency and fairness of the process.”
The upcoming elections are set to be a crucial moment in Ghana’s democratic history, determining not only the next president but also the 275 members of Parliament. With the country grappling with severe economic challenges, including high inflation and rising unemployment, the elections carry even more weight.

As the two main political parties, the NDC and the New Patriotic Party (NPP), prepare for a fierce contest, Mahama’s opponent, Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, is campaigning under the slogan “It is possible,” emphasizing digitalization and economic diversification. In contrast, Mahama is focusing on a 24-hour economy and stronger anti-corruption measures, including implementing the auditor general’s recommendations.
The results of these elections will be pivotal not only for Ghana’s leadership but also for its economic future.
