Declare stance on LGBTQ like Mahama -Dr. Apaak to Bawumia
Member of Parliament Builsa South Dr. Clement Apaak has challenged Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the New Patriotic Party’s flagbearer, to clarify his stance on homosexuality just like former President John Dramani Mahama did. Dr. Apaak quoted Mr. Mahama’s statements on the issue, in which he expressed his opposition to same-sex marriage based on his Christian faith as a member of the Assemblies of God Church. Dr. Apaak stated that they are eagerly awaiting Dr. Bawumia’s response on the matter.
The Parliament is currently considering a legislation, known as the Promotion of Proper Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill or Anti-gay/LGBTQ bill, which has garnered widespread controversy. The bill aims to criminalize the promotion, advocacy, funding, and engagement in homosexual activities, with penalties including prison terms and the withholding of health services from the LGBTQ community.
During a public forum in Koforidua as part of his ‘Building Ghana Tour,’ Mr. Mahama reiterated his opposition to LGBTQ activities, citing his faith and belief in the traditional understanding of gender and marriage. He emphasized that his personal convictions do not align with the concept of changing one’s gender or same-sex marriage.
