Deputy IGP sues Captain Smart, Media General for defamation
The Deputy Inspector General of Police (IGP), Mr. Christian Tettey Yohunu, has initiated a defamation lawsuit against broadcaster Blessed Godsbrain Smart Yirenkyi, widely known as Captain Smart, and Media General Limited. The suit, filed at the Accra High Court on Thursday, January 2, 2025, follows allegations made by Captain Smart during a radio and TV program on December 27, 2024.
In his claim, the Deputy IGP contends that Captain Smart falsely accused him of being involved in a plot to destabilize Ghana’s constitutional order by supporting a coup. Additionally, Captain Smart alleged that Mr. Yohunu’s appointment as Deputy IGP was politically driven and that he had attended meetings aimed at securing the position.
The broadcaster further claimed that Yohunu had been visiting the homes of National Democratic Congress (NDC) officials while allegedly being a member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), offering them money in an attempt to secure the position of IGP.
As a result of these defamatory statements, the Deputy IGP is seeking general damages and an injunction to prevent further defamatory remarks. He is also requesting that the court orders the defendants to retract the statements and issue an unconditional apology, which would be published through three broadcasts on Onua TV and three radio announcements on Onua FM.
