Dr. Adu Anane Antwi appointed Chairman of new SEC Board

A trusted hand returns to the helm
In a pivotal moment for Ghana’s financial sector, Dr. Adu Anane Antwi, a seasoned financial expert and former Director-General of the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), has been appointed Chairman of the newly reconstituted SEC Governing Board. His appointment was officially announced during an inauguration ceremony held on May 19 and presided over by the Minister for Finance, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson.

A strategic appointment at a critical time
The appointment of Dr. Antwi comes at a time when Ghana is navigating significant economic challenges. The Finance Minister, in his address, underscored the crucial role the SEC plays in maintaining market stability and fostering investor confidence. “I am exceedingly pleased to see this board come to life,” he stated. “Ghana has endured significant economic stress in recent years, and our people are rightly concerned.”

Mandate: Restore confidence and accountability
Dr. Forson made it clear that the new board is tasked with a critical mission: to restore confidence, integrity, and dignity in Ghana’s capital markets. He emphasized the importance of strong regulation, transparency, and accountability, warning that “the taxpayer cannot continue to be used as a punching bag” due to systemic regulatory failures. The new board, he said, must act with integrity and purpose to protect investors and ensure that the public trust is not misplaced.

A board built on expertise and public service
The reconstituted board brings together a diverse team of professionals from various sectors, ensuring a broad-based approach to financial oversight and policy direction. The members include:

  • Dr. Adu Anane Antwi – Chairman
  • Dr. James Klutse Avedzi
  • Mr. Mensah Thompson Emmanuel
  • Ms. Deborah Mawuse Agyemfra
  • Dr. Zakaria Mumuni
  • Mr. Louis Kwame Amo
  • Ms. Maame Samma Peprah
  • General Legal Council Nominee
  • Mr. Edward Kaale-Ewola Dery
  • Mr. William Coffie
  • Hon. Helen Adwoa Ntoso, MP

Their collective mandate is clear: ensure effective regulatory oversight, bolster market integrity, and strengthen investor protection mechanisms.

Dr. Adu Anane Antwi: A proven reformer
Dr. Antwi’s return to the SEC marks a full-circle moment for a man who has long been instrumental in shaping Ghana’s capital market landscape. With his deep institutional knowledge and proven leadership, expectations are high that he will guide the Commission through a new era of reform, transparency, and resilience.

As the SEC enters this new chapter, the public and financial sector stakeholders alike will be watching closely. With economic recovery efforts underway, the new board has an opportunity to enact meaningful reforms and demonstrate that strong, principled leadership can restore faith in Ghana’s financial regulatory systems.
